For an off-brand drink, this is surprisingly good – though perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised because TOPVALU’s Lager Beer is better than most of the happoushu (fake beer/second class beers) out there. There’s a medium body here and the sweet/bitter flavor of the yuzu meshes well with the moderate/high amount of sugar. Nobody really experiments with yuzu as a regular flavor – TOPVALU’s is the first regular flavor I’ve seen aside from Kirin’s Yuzu Hyouketsu, but I’d love to see what Suntory would do with a Zero Yuzu.

Finishing off the TOPVALU series, I drank the grapefruit chuuhai. I prefer this to the TOPVALU Lemon because it’s less tart. Overall, I like the TOPVALU series: at 88 yen a can the price can’t be beaten, and there is some variety with the alcohol content and sugar levels. However, these still aren’t what I’ve been searching for – a sweeter chuuhai with 5-8% alcohol that’s low in sugar. But if you can find this brand, I’d recommend them.

This is tart and not sweet. Honestly, I like the 75 kcal version better, but at 6% alcohol, it gets the job done quick.

Why are all of these grape chuuhai not very purple? It’s a great mystery to me. This cheap  TOPVALU grape chuuhai is very high in sugar, very sweet, and has a very tangy aftertaste. It was too sweet for my palate, and while I’m not being negative, I don’t think I will buy this one again.

Ah, umeshu. My friend/enemy. This one is smooth, sweet, and a little crisp. I might just prefer it to the Suntory Horoyoi, but I’m not gaga over the sugar levels.

I’m not exactly sure how this chuuhai uses less sugar and the same amount of alcohol and the TOPVALU Lemon 75, but I guess I’ll have to take AEON”s word. This grapefruit chuuhai has the faint taste and smell of grapefruit. I greatly dislike eating grapefruits, but as a flavoring I prefer them to lemons. This is a very, very tart drink, but I can’t detect the alcohol at all. It’s like grapefruit-flavored soda water. I would definitely drink this again.

TOPVALU is the private brand of AEON, a chain of supermarkets. There are over 1700 products under the TOPVALU label, and many of them are surprisingly good… including their reduced calorie chuuhai and are only half the price of many chuuhai you can find at other stores.

This 75 calorie lemon-flavored chuuhai uses 3.6% real lemon juice and is tart. With only 2.1 grams of sugar, it is not sweet at all, but I suspect because it has a relatively low amount of alcohol, it’s not bitter. I prefer my chuuhai a bit sweeter, but this is a nice, balanced, tart drink.
