“Sweet and bitter” is not a phrase I can use to describe many things, but the contradictory phrase seems apt here. Natsu mikan is a kind of bitter tangerine native to Asia. (“Natsu” also means “summer”, referring to when the fruit ripens, thus making it an appropriate summer limited edition.) The tastes clash bitterly here, and to me I feel like drinking this chuuhai is like swallowing medicine. T_T

Wow, this chuuhai really has the taste of green apples! I personally don’t associate granny smiths with the summer, but oh well. The high level of sugar gives the drink a very smooth and sweet taste, but it’s sweeter than I’d prefer.

Rich, smooth, and sporting the largest amount of sugar I’ve ever seen, this chuuhai tastes like mild juice. It tastes great, but I’m afraid a couple of these will pack on the pounds.

Sometimes a chuuhai just falls through the cracks…

I was certain that I had reviewed Asahi’s Cassis Orange chuuhai, but an exhaustive search of my records shows I had not. I definitely bought it and photographed it, so likely I intended to review it but got distracted and ended up it confusing it with Suntory’s Cassis Orange.

Asahi’s take on the most popular cocktail among Japanese women is much sweeter than the reduced-sugar Suntory version. At 6.8 grams per 100 ml, it’s not as disgustingly sweet as 10 or higher beverages can be, but nonetheless it’s pretty intense. The can advertises that the sensation of juiciness has been increased with this version, but since I lack the original on hand, I can’t remember the difference.

I’m of mixed minds on this drink. I do enjoy the richness of its body and the flavor, but the sickeningly sweetness is just too much for my palate.

Behold the redesign of the Asashi Cocktail Partners lineup! Somehow, the “Mango & Orange” eluded me during its original run, so I don’t know if the upgraded version is really more juicy as the can claims. As usual, the Fuwarich chuuhai is rich and sweet, with a low amount of alcohol and a very high level of sugar. It tastes great, but it is definitely not a diet drink. I can confidently say however that the Fuwarich series has never disappointed me.

Asahi’s been busy redesigning the cans of several of their chuuhai series, but this aloe chuuhai is a new addition to their Slat lineup. I’ve gone on record by stating my lack of affection for Aloe, so I was quite surprised by the quality of this smooth and milky drink. It doesn’t quite have the richness of Calpis, but is something more in line with Calpis soda, and the little chucks of aloe flesh were pleasant. Maybe I’m in an aloe mood because I burned my thumb earlier today and wish I had the plant on hand…

This is the first “early summer” limited edition chuuhai of the 2011, and the can spolights the new design of the Cocktail Partners series. I love lychees, there are one of my favorites fruits, and the first Chinese fruit I think of. Grapefruit… not so much. The sweet lychee flavor and the bitter grapefruit mix and negate each other. I would have preferred a straight up lychee chuuhai. (Incidentally, I love lychee wine.)
