Suntory first launched a successful line of 0 calorie/0 alcohol beverages designed to mimic the taste of cocktails; now they have released “chuuhai taste”, to replicate the taste of canned chuuhai. This might have been a step down, but at least it seems that grapefruit chuuhai can be made with artificial sweeteners and without alcohol fairly well. In fact, doesn’t that make this just grapefruit soda water? But when I want a chuuhai but don’t want to get tipsy, I’ll pick up a can of this.

If you have read my reviews of other TaKaRa chuuhai. you know what I’m gonna say. This has the taste of plum and vomit. T_T

Though I will praise TaKaRa for their diagonal striped in-printed cans. The grooves are neat!

Rich, smooth, and sporting the largest amount of sugar I’ve ever seen, this chuuhai tastes like mild juice. It tastes great, but I’m afraid a couple of these will pack on the pounds.

This has a really good and smooth blend of three types of different grapefruits, which give the chuuhai a rich, slightly tart, but mild and tasty taste and texture. I’m surprised I somehow missed this back when I was reviewing the Calori cocktails last year.

Tangy and sweet, with a richer body than the regular light of ultra-light Calori drinks. Asahi goes for the “fuwarich” label, but Suntory uses “Cocktail” to denote their higher quality, richer drinks. The pulp included in the can is tasty, and I like the blend of muscats and peaches, two light and smooth fruits that suit each other well.

Sometimes a chuuhai just falls through the cracks…

I was certain that I had reviewed Asahi’s Cassis Orange chuuhai, but an exhaustive search of my records shows I had not. I definitely bought it and photographed it, so likely I intended to review it but got distracted and ended up it confusing it with Suntory’s Cassis Orange.

Asahi’s take on the most popular cocktail among Japanese women is much sweeter than the reduced-sugar Suntory version. At 6.8 grams per 100 ml, it’s not as disgustingly sweet as 10 or higher beverages can be, but nonetheless it’s pretty intense. The can advertises that the sensation of juiciness has been increased with this version, but since I lack the original on hand, I can’t remember the difference.

I’m of mixed minds on this drink. I do enjoy the richness of its body and the flavor, but the sickeningly sweetness is just too much for my palate.
