Suntory has just pulled off a major overhaul of its Calori lineup, and the latest new flavor is this oddly clear, mango-flavored chuuhai. It tastes just like you might imagine mango sprite would taste. It’s light-bodied and nicely balanced. There’s no labeling on the can that this is a limited edition, so let’s hope it stays around.

Oooo, this is good. The latest limited edition Calpis Bartime flavor is uses vodka, milk calpis liquor, and apricot liquor for an extremely smooth, faintly milky drink that doesn’t taste like it has any alcohol at all. The sneaky bastard! I had to resist a strong urge to down the whole cocktail in three huge gulps. My only reservation is the obscene sugar level, but this is great for a once in a blue moon treat.

This golden-colored version of Suntory’s canned champagne seems only available for limited times at Kakuyasu stores. It’s not even mentioned on Suntory’s website, so the “official” site I found is Kakuyasu’s product description. This was in production in winter in 2011 but has been absent so far in 2012, however, it will be on sale again from the middle of March. It’s hard to find, but better than the Rose; it has a smoother taste and is slightly less sweet. I recommend it if you can find it.

Just peachy… seems to me that with the exemption of the basic Calpis Sour, all of the other flavors are limited editions. That’s fine with me, cuz each Caplis Sour I think I shall only drink once. I neither like nor dislike this line, so the constant revolving door of “add fruits to bitter milk soda” does not seduce me into scooping up the product.

Suntory Cocktail Calori Sparling Red Grapes & Orange / サントリーカクテルつぶつぶ果実入り 赤ぶどう&オレンジ

This Winter 2011 Limited Edition chuuhai tastes like a nice, light citrus soda. I neither like nor dislike the small bits of fruit, as they are so tiny they don’t affect the texture of the drink, unlike Asashi’s Slat lineup. The flavors of red grapes and orange compliment each other well and don’t overwhelm the taste buds. Since this is a reduced sugar chuuhai, it doesn’t taste overly sweet and has a very clean finish. Recommended.

I made a mistake. One more standard flavor TaKaRa Shouchuu highball exists – the grapefruit. TaKaRa’s also come out with some new limited edition flavors, which I have yet to try. I don’t think I’ll be having the grapefruit again; it was quite bitter. As always, however, it came in a lovely can.

*Note this picture is for the 500 ml edition, but the nutritional information posted above is for the 350 ml version.

The grapefruit variety of Sparx seems much less popular than the lemon one; I only found the grapefruit at one 7-11 and now they don’t have it anymore. This tastes light, but its kick is intense and got me buzzed very, VERY quickly. I thought it tasted just as fine as the lemon version, so no real surprises her.
