This might be my favorite product name: slat. I love saying it. “Man, slats in Japan are really cheap!” “I love me some slats!” “I could drink slats all day long!” This is because I have the emotional maturity of an elementary schooler, by the way. The unfortunately romanized “slat” is in fact “すらっと”, a word for “slim,” the idea here being that at less than 100 calories per can, these cheap slats will keep the ladies’ figures sleek and slender.
As Asahi’s aiming at the female market here, it makes sense that their new limited edition slat is cassis orange-flavored, the most popular cocktail among women in Japan. This hot red slat contains fruity pulp and is very, very sweet despite not having much sugar – a testament to the powerful flavoring of cassis. Like Pepsi, it lacks a dry aftertaste to clear the palate of its vivid sweetness. I like this cheap slat, but I probably won’t be ordering it a lot.
