Asahi Beer’s limited edition offering for the Autumn season is this sweet, pink grapefruit chuuhai. “Fuwarich” is Asahi’s self-penned word, a play on the Japanese “fuwafuwa (ふわふわ/フワフワ)”, meaning light and airy. I guess Asahi’s marketing department enjoys oxymorons, as one of their Wonda coffee drinks is called “Zero Max” (which is supposed to indicate there is no sugar in the coffee. Perhaps no focus groups wanted to buy “Coffee Minimum”.)
So, how does this “rich in lightness” chuuhai fare? It has a mellow flavor and fairly aromatic bouquet. It is sweet, but doesn’t taste excessively sugary. But make no mistake, this drink has one of the higher sugar concentrations for chuuhai. I might drink one of these in an evening, but several would be too sweet for my palate.
